Pure Wrestling Goodness: ROH Tries Internet PPV for Final Battle

Ring of Honor has spent months building up to Saturday night’s “Final Battle 2009” show in New York City, and fans around the world will also be able to see the show as it happens.

Through a partnership with Go Fight Live, fans can pay $14.95 to watch ROH’s annual wrapup show live as it happens at www.gofightlive.tv.

GFL has been getting fans ready by showing classic ROH shows during the week for $4.99.

Austin Aries will defend the ROH champion in the main event against Tyler Black, who will be seeking the title as well as revenge for a fireball attack by the champion.

Jay & Mark Briscoe will try to win their sixth ROH tag team title when they challenge The American Wolves (Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards).

Eddie Kingston will settle his feud with Chris Hero in a Fight Without Honor; while Kevin Steen & El Generico will try to score their third win in a row over The Young Bucks (Nick & Matt Jackson).

High flyers Jack Evans and Teddy Hart will return to ROH at Final Battle. Evans will team with Rocky Romero against Hart and Alex Koslov. These four men wrestle regularly in Mexico’s AAA promotion.

Other matches include Necro Butcher & Delirious vs. The Embassy (Bison Smith & Erick Stevens); Roderick Strong vs. Kenny King; Colt Cabana vs. Claudio Castagnoli; and Kenny Omega vs. Rhett Titus.

I’m very happy to hear that Dave Prazak will be calling the matches live with a pair of color commentators. ROH should consider doing all of the commentary live at the shows.

When I announced at IWC last weekend for promoter Norm Connors’ final show, the previous night’s DVD was already finished and ready to be sold. I think ROH fans would enjoy being up to speed on each live event if the DVDs came out that quickly.

Live action tonight in Virginia

ROH Final Battle weekend begins tonight (Dec. 18) in Manassas, Va., at Sports Network and Fitness, located at 8320 Quarry Road.

Black will face Roderick Strong, while Aries teams with Kenny King to take on The Young Bucks.

In a preview of tomorrow night’s tag team title match, The American Wolves team Alex Koslov to face Rocky Romero and the Briscoe Brothers.

Other bouts include Colt Cabana vs. Chris Hero; Kenny Omega vs. Rhett Titus; and Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. The Embassy.

ROH TV

This week on HDNet, fans saw the first two matches to set up the original Pick 6 contenders. Delirious pinned Kenny King in the opener, and Tyler Black downed Sonjay Dutt in the main event.

Also, Erick Stevens pinned Robbie Marcel after a Doctor Bomb; and Steve Corino returned to ROH by taking a forfeit loss against Lance Lewd, only to attack Lewd after the non-match.

Pittsburgh action

Ring of Honor’s Colt Cabana defeated Fabulous John McChesney in a very good match on Connors’ final show at A Call to Arms: Full Circle last Saturday night. Cabana passed along a message from CM Punk thanking Connors for all he did to further Punk’s career.

Delirious also had a strong match with TNA champion AJ Styles. After the match, Styles said that he might have enough stroke to get Delirious and his translator, Daizee Haze, into TNA.

I would highly recommend checking out this show. Not only was it an emotional celebration of Pittsburgh wrestling, but the quality of the action was top-notch. Shiima Xion and Jimmy DeMarco opened a lot of doors for themselves with their performance in the main event. You can order both nights’ shows at www.iwcwrestling.com.
